From Bassinet to Crib

Spread the love

Bassinets are perfect size for new born babies, they are less bulky than cribs, and fit easier in the parents’ bedroom; which makes it easier to reach the baby to offer him comfort or to nurse.

Moving the baby to a crib depends on the following factors:

  • Your baby’s weight and height:  Check the bassinet’s weight limit in the instruction manual to find out if the baby is getting close to it and switch to a crib. Usually, bassinets may accommodate a baby up to 8 Kg. As for baby’s height, it is easier to notice and recognize if the baby is no longer comfortable or looking cramped.
  • If the baby started to roll over, then the bassinet is no longer safe for him.
  • Your baby’s age: Paediatricians often recommend making the switch around 3 to 4 months, and almost always before 6 months when most babies are rolling over and starting to sit up.
  • If the baby’s sleep patterns and schedule are starting to shape and the baby is beginning to sleep for 5 or 6 hours at a time, then maybe it is time to reconsider moving the baby to his own room.

You will generally sense when it is time to move your baby into a crib or even into a separate room when the time comes.  There are no strict rules but it is important to make sure that a bassinet is still safe for your baby and if in doubt it would be better to consider a move to the crib.
