What the Experts Say

Parenting is not easy! It requires constant involvement and complete dedication by both parents, at all times. The day a child is born until the time they become fully independent, and even after that, parents need to look out for their children and accept and deal with the challenges every stage brings. There is no ‘one size fits all’ parenting guide, which makes it even more challenging! No two children are the same, no two days are the same and every day brings in newer confusions, anxieties and doubts for parents. While talking to others – friends and family – can make you feel better, do not expect solutions; your child is unique!

You may be facing problems with physical development, emotional issues, intellectual or various other aspects of your child’s life. It is always best to consult an expert who understands these challenges from a deeper perspective and may be able to help you better. To begin with, parents need to be more in control of their own emotions and behavior. Constant yelling and shouting at children is never a solution and may only make the child stubborn and resistant to listening to you. You need to be calm at all times and engage in healthy communications rather than one sided anger. Never create a fear in the mind of the child. Most parents threaten their children with punishments which can have a deeper impact on the child than you understand. Fear is the last thing you want to instill in the mind of a young child. Don’t be over protective either, if a child falls or fails at something let them cope with the situation on their own. Be there if the child turns to you but don’t rush at the first sign of distress!

Every stage brings in new challenges that you need to be prepared to handle. Talking to experts might help you with tools and ways that have proved to be effective but again there are no sure solutions! As children grow older they become more connected to their friends than family, it is normal, but do not let the chain of communication break in the process. You need to take a step back but be ready to step up whenever required. Issues like anger and aggressiveness may be difficult to handle but if you keep the communication open and be calm yourself, this too shall pass!
